Dog Training Tools
Robin and I have found some products that are really helpful in training your dog and keeping him safe. We would like to share some links to those products. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding the use of these tools in your training program.
Martingale Collars – These are great because they provide a safe and effective “training snap” for the dog owner when they need to get their dog’s attention without harming them. We have use them for years.
Petsafe Easy Walk Harness – If your dog is pulling on the leash and not paying attention on the walk, this will often help resolve that quickly and easily. The secret is that the leash is connected to the harness at the dog’s chest. When the dog pulls, he naturally turns back to you. It is like the dog is actually correcting himself and focusing back to you!
Six Foot Dog Leash for Larger Dogs – The good, old-fashioned dog leash is always the best! This is a one inch thick, six foot long leash from Leashboss. It is extra strong for even the biggest dogs and has a very comfortable handle. We use this leash with all our big dogs.
Great News! Leashboss is offering all my clients 20% off on all their merchandise. Simply enter NGDT20OFF in the discount box at checkout.
Six Foot Dog Leash for Puppies & Smaller Dogs – This is the leash for smaller dogs and puppies. You also have the opportunity to order this product in longer lengths that can be used for distance training.
Five Foot Leash for Puppies under 5 lbs – This is the appropriate leash for puppies and dogs that are less than 5 lbs. It is slightly shorter than the leashes we normally recommend and thinner than the standard puppy leash. Although it can be used for walking, it is most effective as part of our behavioral redirection process taught in our training lessons.
Six Foot “No Chew” Leash – Some dogs, often puppies, love to grab their leash in their mouth and chew it while you are out on a walk. If you aren’t paying attention, they will chew clear through it in less than a minute. Using a leash they can’t chew through is one of several options that can resolve this issue. This leash is made with a thin, steel braided cable that your dog will not be able to chew through.
30 Foot Dog Training Lead – This is one of the essentials for successful dog training. They are hard to find in the normal pet stores because this one is one inch thick. Most of the ones you find in stores are 1/2 inch and are hard to use. We use this tool for extended obedience commands such as come and stay as well as special walking exercises and potty management.
Great News! Leashboss is offering all my clients 20% off on all their merchandise. Simply enter NGDT20OFF in the discount box at checkout.
20 Foot Small Dog Training Lead – This is one of the essentials for successful dog training. This is is well suited for smaller dogs that don’t need the longer and thicker trainer from Leash Boss.
Baskerville Dog Muzzles – When a dog nips or bites, that can make the owner scared. This is a humane tool to allow us to train you and your dog to have the nipping and biting end while keeping the owner “out of the line of fire”.
Kurgo Seat Belt Dog Collar Tether – It is important to keep your dog safely secured when in the car. This tether hooks directly to your seat belt latch just like when you “hook” your seat belt. The other end will attach to your dog’s collar or harness. It is simple to use and will keep you and your dog safe and secure while in the car. We suggest using an Easy Walk Harness in conjunction with the tether.
Bitter Apple – This is a yucky but “puppy and dog safe” spray that you can put on things your dog may nip or chew. Please check with Robin or Bruce regarding the proper amount and usage.
Woolite Pet Stain & Odor Remover – This is designed to remove the potty smell from your carpet. Robin and I love it because is is also a great carpet cleaner. We have been using this for any potty accidents in our home for the last several years.
Bark Potty – This is a specialized “wee-wee pad” that you only have to replace once a month. Our experience has shown that it also absorbs most of the nasty smells associated with standard wee-wee pads. We use it with our small dogs and love it.
Washable Puppy Potty Pad – This is a puppy potty pad that you can throw in the washer and use over and over again. You can use them by themselves or (as we do), put them under a “throw-away” pad for just a little extra protection.
Spray Bottle – The Spray Bottle is part of the passive-physical level of correction communication. It’s purpose is to passively get your dog’s attention to focus on your calm and resolute body language. It is part of the process that we taught you during our initial training session. Besides the link below, you can also find this on Amazon by clicking here.
(It should not cost more than $4. If they have raised the price, Google “Soft ‘N Style Mini Curve Spray Bottle 5 oz” to find a better price.)
Shake Bottle Chain – The Shake Bottle, like the Spray Bottle, is part of the passive-physical level of correction communication. It’s purpose is to passively get your dog’s attention to focus on your calm and resolute body language. It is part of the process that we taught you during our initial training session. The Shake Bottle is simply a Gatorade bottle with a piece of chain inside. We like to use a Zinc Plated Steel Straight Link Chain from Home Depot. We put a twelve link piece of the Home Depot chain into the Gatorade bottle.
Classic Kong Dog Toy – This is our favorite chew/food toy. Dogs love it because of the goodies you can stick in it. They also love chewing on the high quality, American made rubber. Your dogs have had them for many, many years.
Deer Antlers – This is a great and safe chew toy. As the name says, this is a dear antler, a REAL deer antler. It is all natural and extreemly hard. This means it will not splinter like regular bones or get “gooey” like many other chew toys. It lasts for ever and is really easy to clean. We put a little low sodium chicken broth on ours when we give them to our dogs.
PawHut Heavy Duty Steel Dog Crate – A good dog crate is important for many parts of your dog’s training. It can also provide extra safety and security for many dogs with separation anxiety. We use this crate for our big Shepherd who can “destroy” standard crates.
Standard Wire Dog Crate – If you don’t need a heavy duty dog crate, this is the crate that we personally use for many of our dogs. It is from a local store called Hollywood Feed. You can also have them shipped to you if you are not nearby. We find them to be of excellent quality and the prices are really great. Crates are great to modify some behaviors such as separation anxiety, help teach potty training, or provide an extra level of safety when you leave the house.
Calm Paws Collar – Although this is not a “standard training tool” used in “behavioral dog training”, it is a great device to keep your dog from chewing at stiches or licking soars. It hooks to your dog’s current collar so that you dog does not have to “learn a new sensation”. The cone is firm but not stiff. This is far more comfortable than the hard plastic cones used in similar collars. We have used it on our dogs with great success.
Dog Ramp – Dog ramps are often used for larger dogs that just don’t want to get in the car. The size of the dog that may need a ramp is normally determined by “the strength of our backs”. If your dog won’t get in the car by themselves, a dog ramp is often a great solution.
The ramps are normally used to get the dog in the back of the SUV or truck. This is because the opening made by most “back seat” car doors is not wide enough for the dog ramp. We also like to use a longer ramp because that will provide a lower angle for them to climb. We use the Top Paw ramp from PetSmart (below). We have had great success in using it with dogs weighing up to seventy-ish pounds.
Slow Feeder Dog Bowl – Many dogs and puppies have veracious appetites and gobble their food down in seconds. This is not healthy for your dog. The way to easily prevent this is with a dog bowl that forces your dog to slow down their eating.
These dog bowls are normally called “Slow Feeders” and are designed with dividers that make your dog slow down his eating. We use this type of bowl for several of our dogs that inappropriately “gulp their food”.
