Quick Tips on Doggie Allergies
My wife was at a dog training session in Cumming yesterday and she quickly noticed that the dog was scratching himself and chewing at spots on his body. She did a quick examination of the dog and could not find any fleas. She asked the client about it and the client mentioned that he had noticed his dog itching a lot more than normal recently. This happened to one of our dogs a few years ago and we were given a great suggestion that seemed to solve the problem…
First, I want to make it very clear that my wife and I are not Veterinarians and have not been professionally trained to diagnose canine skin allergies and the like. What we would like to share is what our Veterinarian passed on to us when we had the same problem. It worked for us, so we want to share the knowledge provided.
We have been told that when you see itching and might think that your dog has a skin allergy; it could be caused by a reaction to the grain commonly found in many dog foods today. This is a “quick and dirty” observation that is very inexpensive to check out. The great thing about this solution is that it doesn’t run up initial medical bills.
The “quick and dirty” and inexpensive solution for canine skin allergies is to switch to a grain-free food. There are many great “grain free” dog foods on the market and they are easily obtained in most pet stores. The one thing that you need to watch for when purchasing a “grain free” dog food is for the “hidden grain” that might not be displayed within the list of ingredients.
When you switch to a grain-free dog food, pick any meat except for chicken when making your selection. For most chickens, their main food is corn. So when you have chicken in your dog food, you are also adding corn. Pick another meat such as lamb, duck, salmon, etc. as the main meat ingredient and you will eliminate that “hidden source of grain”. If your dog is allergic to every type of meat except chicken, look for free range chicken in the list of ingredients. Free range chicken is normally not fed corn as part of their diet.
